Introduction
Sport and Recreation Spatial is a web graphical information system (GIS) that allows state sporting organisation participant, facility and associated data to be explored and analysed via an interactive map.
The flexible system allows the user to visualise regional patterns and trends over times via a variety of different methods.
It is estimated that the combination of data options allow for in excess of 15 million possible map outputs.

Data options
Select different map types and apply them to a selection of member data.
By default the map is displaying Participants aged between 4 and 70 grouped by LGA in the most recent year available.
Selected participants
Selected participants are a subset of all participants matching the currently active data filters
eg: Males aged between 5 and 19
Females in a particular Club etc
Total participants
Total participants is the total number of participants in the region
NOTE: Total participants can differ from selecting all participants aged 4 to 100 as some sport data does not include the participant age.

Map shading scale
By default most maps use the exponential shading scale, which automatically adjusts to cover the range of data from the selected participants.
This can highlight regions with particularly low or high values, but may not use every available legend range.
This can be changed to use a quantile shading scale, which splits the regions so that an equal number are placed in each legend range.
This has the effect of making very low, or very high values less prominent
Data filters
The currently selected participants can be altered by
- Changing the current year or year range
- Changing the gender (Persons, Males, Females)
- Changing the age range (Any range between 4 and 100)
- Selecting one or more clubs (Browse or search for clubs)
- Selecting one or more programs (Browse or search for programs)
- Selecting one or more associations (Browse or search for associations)
NOTE: Not all data filters will be available for all maps or sports.
Selecting clubs, programs, associations or level
To select a club, use the "select club" button to display a club listing
Either search for a club name, or use the alphabetical filters
To add a club to the list, click "select"
When you have selected all relevant clubs, click "Load map" to apply the selection to the map
The selected clubs or programs will appear in the "Active filters" panel once applied.
Overlays
Overlays are available for several complementary datasets
Use the show/hide overlay button to toggle between the overlay and the original data map.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a choropleth map?
A choropleth map uses graded differences in shading or colour or the placing of symbols inside defined areas on the map in order to indicate the average values of some property or quantity in those areas
Q: How do I see participation change in different areas?
- Select the "Data options" menu
- Select "Participation change" as the map type
- Adjust the year range slider to the desired year range
- Click "Load map"
Q: How do I see how many participants in my program or programs?
- Select the "Data options" menu
- Select "Participant count" as the map type
- Click the "Select programs" menu
- Search or browse for programs
- Click "Select" to add a program to the list
- Click "Load map" to apply the selected programs to the map
Q: How do I see how many participants in a group of related clubs?
- Select the "Data options" menu
- Select "Participant count" as the map type
- Click the "Select clubs" menu
- Search for the first club in the group
- Click "Select" to add a club to the list
- Search for the second club in the group
- Click "Select" to add a club to the list
- Repeat as required
- Click "Load map" to apply the selected clubs to the map
Q: What does the region summary show?
The region summary shows key details for the selected region
- Current mapped value for the region
- Selected participant summary for the region (eg: Males Aged 10 to 20)
- Total participant summary for the region (Any age, Any gender)
- Facility summary
- Inter-region benchmark charts
- Region facility details
Q: What are the different types of participation rate?
Selected participants can be measured against the region's
- Estimated population for the current year
- Estimated population of the same gender for the current year
- Estimated population of the same age for the current year
- Estimated population of the same age and gender for the current year
- Total participants in the current year
Q: Why are there different map shading scales?
Different shading scales can paint a different picture of the data, highlighting different elements of the map.
The default exponential scale of 8 ranges aims to highlight regions with particularly high or low values, but may have many regions of the same colour in the middle of the range.
The quantile option has an even spread across all ranges, but might not identify particularly high or low values
eg: The following two maps use the same data, but show a very different map
Exponential scale (8 divergent ranges)
Quantile scale (5 equal splits)
Q: What are the limitations of the data?
All regional statistics derived from sport membership data are based on the residential postcodes of members, and are subject to the usual unavoidable inaccuracies of postcode areas and the uncertainties introduced when postcode data are distributed and assigned to other types of geographical region using correspondence tables produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Where possible erroneous data has been cleaned, however the quality of the sport membership data depends on the accuracy of the data supplied by the sport.
Participant records that do not have a valid age or postcode are not normally included in the map visualisation.
Q: Can I view and export the raw data?
You can view the currently selected participant data from the "View data" menu
The export button is located in the bottom left of screen and will export the data to an Excel spreadsheet.
Q: Can I share the map with others?
Using the bookmark menu you can save the current map
A bookmark can be saved for your user, or shared with all users of the same sport.
The manage bookmarks view allows a bookmark link to be emailed to other users.
Q: Can I view regions other than LGA?
- Select "Display options"
- Select "Region type"
- Choose from Postcode, LGA, SA2, SA3, SA4, GCCSA or Metro/Regional Vic
Q: How can I view the facilities for my sport?
- Select the "Overlays" menu
- Select "SRV Facility Audit 2012"
- Click "Facility locations" to toggle the facility layer on
- Click a facility to view further details
Q: How can I view the facilities in a specific region?
- Click a region on the map, or click the summary link from the region search
- Scroll to the bottom of the region summary to view a table of facilities in that region
Q: What options are available for filtering the Victorian population projections?
- Population projections can be filtered by gender, age range and projection year
- Available projection years are 2016, 2021, 2026 and 2031
Q: What is SEIFA, and what options are available?
The four SEIFA indexes are measures of relative socio-economic status (SES) calculated for each geographical area by ABS using census data. The SEIFA indexes available as map overlays are:
- Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage (IRSD)
- Index of Relative Socio-Economic Advantage and Disadvantage (IRSAD)
- Index of Economic Resources (IER)
- Index of Education and Occupation (IEO).
As their names suggest, the four indexes are focused on different aspects of SES. Current SEIFA indexes are based on 2011 census data and available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Each index is constructed a weighted combination of socio-economic measures for individuals and households.
